Shreya - The story of an Indian Goddess
This is a story of a girl I met in Delhi. Young, fearless and passionate, she had a spark in her eyes. We worked on the same floor so watching her became a habit.
In a small town of Haryana, lived a young girl, she was named after the Indian goddess, Shreya. Shreya was a charming and beautiful young girl. Her parents were not that rich and it was getting difficult for them to do the proper upbringing of the child. So her grandfather (Mother's father) decided to take the responsibility of the child on him.
Though she was well supported by her grand parents, her Uncle and Aunt didn't treat her well. They were the people who thought that her presence in their family will end up having another member claiming part of the property. This feeling of hatred was the cause that she was treated as a slave in her own grand parent's house.
A very unfortunate incident happened with her, which she didn't forget even after achieving everything is life. The impact of the incident was so deep that her conscious decided not to trust any one in the world. This happened with her when she was in her 8th standard. Her Uncle who was an alcoholic use to have drinks every day at his place and her Aunt always forced her to prepare and serve snacks while he is drinking. One day when his uncle was having drinks with his friends, one of her uncle's friend molested her physically. She took the incident to her Aunt as it only seemed logical to her, but she was beaten as punishment of being so good looking and bringing false accusation. She kept quite afterwards but this one incident make her realize what kind of world she is going to live in.
Time passed and she completed her MBA and started working in a good company in Delhi. She met a guy named Sumit there who was quite good looking and equally hard-working. His presence always brought smile on her face, she use to feel comfortable and relaxed in his presence. Sooner or later they knew it is going to become more than a friendship for them and it happened.
She: I think I have fallen for you.
He: I do feel the same for you.
She: Its being many years that I haven't trusted anyone. Some incidents in your life leaves dark spots on your soul and I had one when I was very young. But after a long time I can see some light.
He: I know you have been through very tough time and believe me nothing makes me more happy then being the carrier of happiness for you. But before we move ahead I want to tell you something.
She: Ahem.
He: I can't marry you. There is something already going on in my family and I believe I would be lying to you if I don't tell you this right now.
She: I can understand, it's good that you have told me this. The base of any relationship should be trust and truth. Does this mean we will not have any relationship.
He: We can be friends.
She: Well, I think that would be enough for me.
They both spend quality time together. Going out on weekends for movie or shopping, having tea in the office hours, snacks in the evening was their usual routine. She was happy, but that happiness didn't last long.
She: My parents has bought a marriage proposal for me.
He: okay. Are you sure?
She: Not sure, I am thinking to say yes. There is some pressure from home as well.
He: Did you meet the guy.
She: Yes, he is working here in Delhi as well, seems fine to me.
He: You know I am here if you need anything. right?
She: Yes and I am very grateful to God for this.
She married the guy named Ravi, Ravi worked in a MNC and was from Haryana too. Their parents thought its a good thing to keep this in the same circle. The initial few months for both of them was good but happiness didn't last long. The fights, arguments, questions and marital rape became the only thing which kept them linked.
Ravi: Why are you wearing such clothes? It makes you look like a slut.
She: I am not a slut and I have the right to wear whatever I want. It's my life too.
Ravi held her from the arm and twist it, she screamed in pain. "Please let go of me", she said. But he held her firmly and slapped her, once, twice. This left a bruise on her left cheek.
She didn't go to office that day and spend her day sitting in her room.
She: Hi Sumit, still sobbing.
Sumit: Hey Shreya. How are you? Did you forget me after marriage.
She: Can we meet? I really need you today.
Sumit: Yes sure, let me know when and where.
She: 1 hour, same old place.
Sumit: okay.
The first thing he noticed when he saw Shreya coming was the bruise on her left cheek. She again looked in the same phase of stress and depression which was there the day he met her first time.
He: Hey.
She just hugged her without saying any word.
He: Is everything okay? why I am getting a feeling that its not?
She: Yes, I am not well neither physically not mentally. I have been through a lot after marriage. There is not a single day I don't think about your question you asked me before marriage. This has been my biggest mistake now.
He: Looking at the marks on her arm. If it's that bad then why are you still tolerating. Why not finish this.
She: It's not that simple Sumit. I belong to a small town in Haryana, everyone knows everyone there. If I will take a divorce it will be very bad for my family. Ravi's parents has already circulated a rumor that I am not treating their son well. I have been doing whatever is in my hands. All the things which I didn't even wanted to do mentally and physically I have done for him but still he thinks I am worthless. I have even started giving my salary to him so that he doesn't think that I am wasting all the money on myself.
He: But isn't it bad. I know you, though you said you are doing these things willingly but I know how much pain you have gone through to do this. And I am not sure why the hell are you even thinking about the society. This society isn't the one stopping Ravi for the things he is doing with you. There are marks on your body which clearly shows that he has been beating you regularly. Divorce is not a flaw in your life, it's a right to live your life your way.
She: Sumit, you are not understanding.
He: No Shreya, you are not understanding it.
Sumit took her phone and dialed her grand father's number and handed over the phone to her.
He: I want you to tell him everything right now.
She: No I can't, they won't understand as well.
On the call, 'hello','hello', Shreya are you there?
She: Hanji Nanu. I am here.
Grand father: What happened beta and why are you sounding so low. Is everything okay. If there is anything wrong please tell us, we haven't forgotten about you darling, we are still here for you.
She: Bursting into tears. Nothing is right Nanu. Ravi's is a bastard. He beats me everyday, stops me to go out, takes all the money which I earn and passes bad comments for me and for my family. I can't tolerate anymore Nanu. This is my limit, please do something, I am in a very bad condition. If you won't do anything I will definitely do something.
Grand father: Why didn't you tell me this earlier. You don't do anything, be at your place. I am coming right now to take you.
Her Grand father took her back and there were lot of meetings happened between both families, eventually a mutual decision was taken to file the divorce. In this mean time, Sumit didn't try to call Shreya. He suspected anything could go wrong if Ravi's side find out that he part of her life.
After six harsh months, she finally got divorce. She called Sumit and told her the whole story and requested him to meet.
He: Hi. This time there was a smile on her face when he saw her.
She: Hey. She gave her a tight hug.
He: Someone is enjoying her freedom.
She: Thanks to you, I am free. You were right divorce is not a stain or a flaw, it's a choice and right to live my life my way.
He: I didn't do anything. I was just there when you needed me. There is nothing I could do more.
She: Yes and being here when I needed you the most is the only thing I am expecting from you, which you did.
He: So Ravi's chapter is finally over.
She: Yes, its over, once and for all. But you know I learnt a big lesson in the past six months when I was going through the divorce process.
He: Can you please share with me.
Whenever there is anything wrong going on in your life, you feel alone and devastated. You feel that it's end of you life, end of your soul. Everything seems to be going against you. You stop trusting people, you think everyone is going to bring harm to you. But that's not true. In those harsh moments there are people who still wants good for you. There are people who wants to stand with you. There are people who makes sure that even though you don't trust them they will continue to support you and fight for you. And those are they people we should trust and be with that time, they are your strength. They are the one who would get you out from all your problems. Don't let any of those leave at any point of your life and be the inspiration and motivation in their life when they needed it as they were when you needed it.
